
Lowes YMCA Lightning (LOY) earns Safe Sport Club Recognition Status

Congratulations to Lowes YMCA Lightning, the latest North Carolina Swimming club to earn USA Swimming’s new Safe Sport Club Recognition! The Safe Sport Club Recognition program distinguishes USA Swimming clubs that demonstrate their commitment to creating safe, healthy, and positive environments for all of their members through the development and implementation of Athlete Protection Policies, Safe Sport Best Practices, and Safe Sport education.
Lowes Lighting Swim Team has been highlighted as a Safe Sport Recognized Club with a banner on its team listing in the USA Swimming Find-a-Team Search and will receive a medallion for their club’s website as well. Clubs can apply for the Safe Sport Recognized Club program through their Club Portal on the USA Swimming website. NCS additions to National & National Junior Teams

USA Swimming announced the addition of four new athletes to the 2020-2021 U.S. National Team and fifteen new swimmers to the 2020-2021 U.S. National Junior Team roster. Additions to the rosters were based on qualifying times swum during the abbreviated 2020 season. Congratulations to the following NCS athletes who earned spots on these prestigious teams!
Claire Curzan (TAC Titans) was added to the National Team roster, where she joins Titan teammates, Charlotte Hook, Ashley Twichell, and other athletes who were on the 2019-2020 roster.
Five of the fifteen new additions to the National Junior Team are NCS swimmers! They include Lindsay Flynn (MSA), Sam Hoover (NCAC), Michael Cotter (TAC), Braeden Haughey (TAC), and Michael Moore (MOR). These athletes join those who had made the 2019-2020 roster.

New Wave swimmer breaks records
Parker Van Olst of New Wave Swimming broke two boys 10 and under short course breast stroke records at the TAC Jingle Bells Meet in December. Van Olst set new marks in both the 50 breast with a time of 33.44 and the 100 breast in 1:11.98. Congratulations on your outstanding swims!
TAC Titan Trio Blitz NCS Records
The TAC Titan’s trio of Charlotte Hook, Caroline Pennington, and Claire Curzan accounted for seven new NCS short course records at the TAC Blizzard Blitz this past weekend. Hook set a new record in the women’s 15-16 200 free, Pennington broke the women’s 15-18 1650 free record, and Curzan established new marks in both the 15-16 100 back and 15-16 200 back. Curzan’s 200 back time was also a new 15-18 record, while her 100 back time was a new record for both the 15-18 and the Open age groups.
In a college meet the previous weekend, Coleman Stewart of NC State set a new NCS Open record in the men’s 100 back.

USA Swimming Golden Goggle Awards
USA Swimming presented the Golden Goggle Awards virtually this year. Summer Sanders, Elizabeth Beisel, and Cullen Jones honored swimmers, past and present, during this special Golden Goggle ceremony. NCS Women in Leadership & Coach Forum

North Carolina Swimming will host a Women in Leadership & Coach Forum via ZOOM on December 9 at 8:30 PM. Susan Teeter will be the guest speaker. Teeter is the former women’s coach at Princeton University and is now a special consultant to USA Swimming on women in leadership and coaching.

Frighteningly fast times at Halloween meets

Several NCS Short Course records fell at Halloween weekend meets. Ezra Zapler of East Carolina Aquatics broke the 11-12 boys record in the 50 free at the ECA meet held at East Carolina University. Parker Van Olst of New Wave Swimming broke the 10 & under boys 100 breaststroke record at the TAC Halloween Bash while New Wave teammate, Sam Marsteiner improved his record times in the 11-12 boys 100 free, 200 free, and 500 free. Congratulations swimmers!
