Claire Curzan of the TAC Titans and Abby Arens of the Marlins of Raleigh were two of the top-performing athletes at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Atlanta. Curzan won five events; the 50 free, the 100 fly, the 100 back, the 100 free, and the 200 fly and was the top female scorer at the meet. Her times in the 50 free and 100 fly were both National Age Group records! Arens swept the women’s 100 and 200 breast stroke events and added a win in the 200 IM to cap her trifecta.
Other top three performances: Tim Connery of SwimMAC Carolina brought home a first place finish in the men’s 100 fly and also captured second place finishes in the 200 IM and the 100 breast. Lindsay Flynn of the Aquatic Team of Mecklenburg had second place finishes in both the women’s 50 free and 100 free. Grace Rainey of SwimMAC finished second in the 200 back while SwimMAC teammates Boyd Poelke and Kiley Wilhelm each earned a third place medal; Poelke in the men’s 100 fly and Wilhelm in the women’s 200 IM. Reid Mikuta of Swim GSA placed third in the 100 breast.
NCS clubs also competed well in the relay events. The ATOM team of Lindsay Flynn, Teresa Ivan, Liza Whitmire, and Katie Rauch won both the 4×50 free and the 4×100 free relay events. SwimMAC’s women won the 4×200 relay with team members Elizabeth Sowards, Kiley Wilhelm, Morgan Razewski and Kensley Merritt. SwimMAC also earned top two and top three finishes in several other relay events.
